Edison Hour
Every bulb you turn on comes with a question.
Start the evening in the dark and build the light back one bulb at a time. Each lamp you switch on earns a question, and by the time the room glows you'll know a few things you didn't at dinner.
The evening
Candlelit: Sweet and talkative.
Turn every light off and sit together on the rug. Take turns switching on one lamp, and whoever turns it on asks a question they've never asked before. Keep going until every bulb in the room is lit, or until one answer is worth staying on.
Pick a pause word you'd never say by accident. Either of you can use it, or simply say stop, at any point and for any reason. Check in along the way, and treat a not yet as a perfectly good answer.
The setting
Every light off to begin with. Then lamps and pendants come on one by one until the room feels right.
Something with a slow pulse and not many words, quiet enough that a question doesn't have to compete.
A woodsy candle that suits brick and old timber. One is plenty.
A worn leather throw on the bed, soft cotton sheets, and a thick rug over the cold floor.
Positions it suits
From the position guide: frank, practical and comfort-aware, with the furniture that makes each one easier.
One seated at the edge, the other close and supported. Upright and connected.
Lying on your sides, turned toward each other. Eye contact and ease.
Both on your sides, one behind the other, with pillows doing the supporting.
One partner sits cross-legged and leans back on their hands; the other kneels astride their lap facing them and rocks. A relaxed cousin of the Lotus.
