Ten films that put the two of you in the mood, from slow-burn longing to Fully Braised, each with our heat rating, the critics' scores, where it's streaming and what to know before you press play.
A good movie night in doesn't need much: a dark room, something warm to drink, and a film that does a little of the work for you. These ten put the two of you in the mood without any awkward scenes you have to talk your way around. They run from the slowest of slow burns to the kind you might pause halfway through.
Each film gets a Low & Slow heat rating, our own scale for how steamy it actually gets, from Warm (all longing, nothing shown) through Simmer, Sizzle and Boil to Fully Braised (you'll know). You'll also find the critics' scores, the runtime, where it's streaming as of October 2026, and anything worth knowing before you press play. Streaming moves around every month, so each card links to a page that always shows where it's playing now.
1. In the Mood for Love
Two neighbors in 1960s Hong Kong realize their spouses are having an affair with each other, and slowly, almost silently, fall for each other instead. Nothing happens on screen and everything happens in their faces. It's the most romantic film on this list and the least explicit, which is the point: watch it when you want the tension, not the release, and let the evening do the rest.
2. Only Lovers Left Alive
A married vampire couple who have been together for centuries, played by Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, drift through Detroit and Tangier at night. It's languid, funny and very cool, a portrait of a love that has outlasted everything. Our pick for an October night: candles on, lights off, nobody in a hurry.
3. Phantom Thread
A famous London dressmaker and the woman who refuses to be just his muse. It's sensual in mood more than on screen: fittings, fabric, breakfast, the push and pull of two stubborn people. It turns darker than you'd expect, and it gives you plenty to talk about afterward, especially about who holds the power in a relationship.
4. Mr. & Mrs. Smith
A bored married couple discover they're both secret assassins hired to kill each other. The fight that turns into something else entirely is the most famous scene, and the whole film is basically flirting with explosions. A good pick when you want fun more than smolder.
5. Out of Sight
A bank robber and the federal marshal chasing him get locked in a car trunk together, and the chemistry between George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez never lets up after that. The hotel bar scene, cut between their conversation and what comes after, is one of the best-edited seductions in film. Stylish, funny and very grown-up.
6. Magic Mike XXL
A road trip with a crew of male dancers on their way to one last convention. There's barely a plot and nobody minds: it's a cheerful, generous film made for the women in the audience, and it's more about joy than sex. A great pick for laughing together before the evening gets serious.
7. Bull Durham
A minor-league baseball fan picks one player each season to take under her wing, and this year two of them want the job. Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner are funny and frank about desire in a way grown-up romances rarely are. Warm, sexy and full of lines you'll end up quoting to each other.
8. The Thomas Crown Affair
A bored billionaire steals a painting for fun, and the insurance investigator sent to catch him decides to play the game instead. Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo are glamorous grown-ups who know exactly what they're doing, and the ballroom dance is a seduction all on its own. Pour something nice for this one.
9. Secretary
A young woman starts a job with a demanding lawyer, and their strange working relationship becomes a dominant and submissive romance. It's funny, odd and tender, and it treats their dynamic as a real love story rather than a shock. If you've been curious about power play, it's a gentle way to start the conversation, and our guide to talking about boundaries and safewords is a good next step.
10. Body Heat
A sweltering Florida summer, a small-town lawyer and a married woman who knows exactly what she wants. It's the steamiest film here, a classic noir where the heat is almost a character, and the affair turns dangerous fast. Save it for a night when you're both in the mood for something hot and a little wicked.
Set up the room
The film is half of it. The other half is the room you watch it in.
- Make it dark and warm. Turn off the overhead light and keep one low lamp or a few candles on. A screen in a fully dark room is harsh; a little warm light behind it is kinder on the eyes and much better for the mood. Our lighting guide has the details.
- Watch from the bed. Stack the pillows against the headboard, add a throw, and put the screen or projector where you can both see it without craning.
- Have something to share. Popcorn is fine. Good chocolate and a bowl of strawberries are better, and our guide to dessert in bed covers the tray and the sheets.
- Pause when you want to. Nobody is grading you on finishing the movie. If a scene gives you an idea, the film will still be there.
If the evening turns into a massage, massage night at home has the setup, and our Scenes have more ideas for a night in when you'd rather skip the screen entirely.
Why not 365 Days or Eyes Wide Shut?
A few films turn up on nearly every list like this one, and we left them off on purpose. 365 Days is built on a kidnapping played as seduction. Cruel Intentions and Wild Things are, at heart, stories about teenagers and sex. Eyes Wide Shut is a gorgeous film, but one subplot has a teenage girl sold to two men. Braise is consent-first, and we'd rather give you ten films you can enjoy without wincing.
