Before you paint
Test it at night
Look at the sample after dark, under the lamps you actually use.
Check your windows
North light cools a color and south light warms it, so look at both times of day.
Flat or eggshell on walls
A low sheen looks soft by lamplight. Keep the shine for trim.
Sample big
Brush two coats over about 2 by 2 feet. A tiny chip can fool you.9
Try every wall
Move the sample around the room. The window wall and the one facing it can look like two colors.9
Lift a dark ceiling
Bright ceilings look higher, so go a shade lighter overhead if a dark room feels low.4
Plan on two coats
Paint calculators like Benjamin Moore's assume two coats on the walls.10
Air it out
Keep windows open while you paint and for a while after. Fumes can linger.3
These are our editorial picks. Screens vary, so try a sample on your own wall before you buy.
Tips, backed up
What the research says
Keep evening light low.
In a study of 116 adults, ordinary room light before bed delayed melatonin and cut its nightly run by about 90 minutes, compared with dim light. Pick paint that still looks good with one or two lamps on.
Gooley JJ, et al. (2011), Exposure to room light before bedtime suppresses melatonin onset and shortens melatonin duration in humans
Blue light hits hardest at night.
Harvard Health reports blue light held back melatonin about twice as long as green light of the same brightness, and suggests dim red night lights. Test colors under warm, low light.
Harvard Health Publishing (2024), Blue light has a dark side
Air out a freshly painted room.
The EPA lists paint as a source of VOCs and notes levels can stay high long after the work is done. Open the windows while you paint and after.
US Environmental Protection Agency (updated 2026), Volatile Organic Compounds' Impact on Indoor Air Quality
Lighter surfaces push walls back.
In virtual-room tests, brighter walls made a room look wider and deeper, and earlier work found bright ceilings look higher. Dark walls pull a room in, which is the point in a cozy bedroom.
von Castell C, Hecht H, Oberfeld D (2018), Bright paint makes interior-space surfaces appear farther away
How a color feels is mostly shared.
A survey of 4,598 people in 30 countries found color and emotion links were largely the same everywhere, with some local twists.
Jonauskaite D, et al. (2020), Universal patterns in color-emotion associations are further shaped by linguistic and geographic proximity
Red's romance boost is small.
A well-known 2008 study linked red to attraction. A later meta-analysis found the effect is small, varies a lot between studies, and may have shrunk over time. Pick red because you love it.

Common questions
What paint color is best for a romantic bedroom?
Warm, softly muted colors look the most flattering by lamplight. A plaster pink like Setting Plaster or Dusty Mauve is an easy place to start.
Is a dark paint color a good idea in a small bedroom?
Often, yes. A deep color on every wall blurs the corners, so the room feels close and cozy instead of cramped. Take it onto the trim too for the full effect.
Farrow & Ball or Benjamin Moore?
Both are good paint. We list one of each for every role, so you can pick by budget and by what your local store carries.
What finish should bedroom walls be?
Flat or matte looks softest and hides small flaws; eggshell wipes clean more easily. Save satin or semi-gloss for trim and doors.
