Choosing positioning furniture

Firmness, cover, size, and discretion: how to pick a wedge, ramp, or chaise you'll actually keep out.

Positioning furniture solves a quiet, common problem: comfort and angle. The single most important attribute is firmness. Soft foam collapses under weight and does nothing; high-density foam holds its shape and is what makes these pieces work. Read for foam density, not just dimensions.

Size and shape determine versatility. A wedge is the easiest entry point; a ramp adds height and length; a chaise is a statement piece that doubles as real furniture. Bigger isn't better. Match the piece to your bed height and the space you have to store it.

The cover matters more than people expect. A removable, machine-washable cover in a durable fabric (microfiber, performance velvet) is the difference between a piece you maintain easily and one you don't. Look for a moisture-resistant inner liner under the cover.

Finally, discretion. The best positioning furniture reads as an ottoman, a bolster, or an accent chaise when it's dressed and sitting out. If a piece only works hidden in a closet, you'll use it less. Choose one you're happy to leave in the room.
