Our verdict

The original double-curve chaise, made by hand in the US since 2003. It looks like a sculptural piece of furniture, and its two arcs hold you both at angles a bed simply can't.

How we vetted it

Vetted from the maker's own specifications, materials, warranty and shipping pages at tantrachair.com, and from the room-placement renders their team sent us. We haven't owned one.

What works well

The patented dual arc is the whole idea: one long curve and one short one, so the chair takes the weight of two people and changes the angle of the hips, which makes positions comfortable that are hard work on a flat bed. It's 74 inches long, 29 inches high and 16.5 inches wide, on a solid alder or maple frame rated for over 1,500 pounds, with a lifetime guarantee on the frame. The upholstery is a soft synthetic leather that's moisture and stain resistant and cleans with mild soap and water, finished with baseball stitching and a choice of pewter, brass or no nailheads, in more than a dozen colors.

Why we chose it

  • Original patented dual-arc design
  • Solid hardwood frame, 1,500 lb rating
  • Lifetime frame guarantee
  • Easy-clean upholstery in many colors
  • Ships in an unmarked box

In your room

Set it at the foot of the bed or along a wall in the bedroom, where it reads as a chaise to anyone who doesn't know. Ebony or espresso with brass nailheads suits a dark, warm room; linen works in a light one. A throw over one end is all the disguise it needs.

Who it's for

Couples who want one serious piece that changes what's possible, and who'd rather it looked like a design object than gear. A strong pick for anyone whose knees, hips or back make a flat bed hard work.
