Speeches Before Bed
A chandelier, a velvet bench, and short speeches about each other.
Weddings and birthdays get speeches. Ordinary good years don't, and they should. Tonight everyone stands up in a grand blue room and says something kind about the others.
The evening
Candlelit: Sweet and talkative.
Each person gives a two-minute speech about someone else in the room: how you met, a moment you're proud of them, what you'd toast if you had a microphone. Applause is required.
Talk about what's on and off the table before anything starts, and agree on a pause word everyone knows. Anyone can step out at any point, with no explanation needed. Check in with each person, not only the group.
The setting
Kill the overheads. A cluster of pillar candles does the rest.
Slow standards and a little vinyl crackle, kept just under the conversation.
A dark, resinous candle that belongs with brass and lacquer.
A heavy velvet throw against smooth silk pillowcases, for the contrast.
Positions it suits
From the position guide: frank, practical and comfort-aware, with the furniture that makes each one easier.
One seated at the edge, the other close and supported. Upright and connected.
A standing embrace, one partner wrapped around the other like a vine. Where many evenings start.
Lying on your sides, turned toward each other. Eye contact and ease.
