The Longest Night
Light every candle at dusk on the darkest night of the year.
Velvet Holiday is our winter room: deep green velvet, gold, and a lot of candlelight. This scene is for the long nights around the solstice, for two or a few close people, when it gets dark early and staying in is the whole plan.
The evening
Candlelit: Sweet and talkative.
Light the candles as soon as it gets dark. Get comfortable under blankets and take turns naming the best moment of your year, then the hardest one, then the one you want next year. Anyone can pass.
- Light the candles at dusk, or switch on flameless ones. Every other light off.
- Say your limits out loud before anything starts. Passing on a turn is always fine.
- Take turns: the best moment of your year, then the hardest, then the one you want next.
- Keep talking until the candles are low.
- Check in with each person. Still good? Keep going, slow down, or stop?
- If you're using real flame, blow them out before you sleep.
Pick a pause word you'd never say by accident. Either of you can use it, or simply say stop, at any point and for any reason. Check in along the way, and treat a not yet as a perfectly good answer. If there are more than two of you, everyone can use it, and anyone can step out.
The setting
Ivory candles in brass, a few tiny warm lights in the greenery, everything else off.
Old jazz standards, a choir far away, or just a fire track. Low.
Fresh greenery and a little spice, never a sugar-cookie candle.
Heavy green velvet, a fur throw, and flannel or silk against skin.
Positions it suits
From the position guide: frank, practical and comfort-aware, with the furniture that makes each one easier.
Lying on your sides, turned toward each other. Eye contact and ease.
Both on your sides, one behind the other. Lazy in the best way.
One seated at the edge, the other close and supported. Upright and connected.
A wrapped-up take on missionary: the receiving partner draws their knees high and the top partner lies fully on them in a close embrace.
